Message from the Board:

Mike Isensee and Tom Langer of the Carnelian Marine St. Croix Watershed District presented

the plans for the coming year for work to improve the water quality of BML at the BMLA Board

Meeting on Oct. 17, 2022. Slide shows of their presentations can be viewed on the BMLA

website – “About/Conferences/CMSCWD Presentation 10.17.22.”

What is planned is very encouraging for the future of BML and all the other 30 lakes and

other waters in the WD. Strategies were presented for addressing the impairments and

prevention of further degradation. Jeff Dahlberg also presented his work on lake

surveying, a very sophisticated date collection/tracking/waypoint system from which

he furnishes PLM (our licensed herbicide applicator) with precise paths to follow on the

lake when herbicide treatment is done. Jeff travels as many as 50 miles on the lake to do

one survey for EWM and establish the computerized route that PLM follows when

treating.

With Tony Vavoulis presiding over his first Board Meeting as President, the Board recognized Mike

Blehert and Rich Burton by presenting them with framed BML maps signed by all other Board

members. BML hoodies were also given to the two senior members of the Board and founders

(in 2009) of the BMLA.

The Final Grant Report prepared by Mike Blehert summarizes the EWM treatment

and survey activity for 2022…. really good news. You can view the report on

the BMLA website under ABOUT/SURVEY AND RESEARCH INFO.

Only 5.18 acres were treated in 2022, and following the treatment the fall

survey found very l ittle regrowth. This suggests low EWM coverage in 2023…. We shall see...Mother

nature rules. A huge thanks to all of those that participated and supported this effort in 2022.

And an extra high five for Jeff Dahlberg and Mike Blehert for their diligence and attention to

details. It’s great to have a positive outcome follow all that hard work.

For some good information on AIS activity check out the DNR Annual Report at mndnr.gov.

Membership;

Membership donations should be sent to –

BMLA

12636 - 182nd St. N.

Marine, MN 55047.

Minimum suggested donation is $50.00. The time has come for making your

2023 BMLA membership donation. The BMLA had a record number of members,

170, in 2022. Membership numbers continue to gradually increase year by year. This trend is

most encouraging but needs to be ongoing. There is a hope by the Board that all lakeshore

property owners, lake users, and interested parties can realize the importance of membership

and membership contributions. There is no good reason for any BML LPO to not be a member of

the BMLA. We have a jewel of a resource and must do everything within our power to keep it

healthy and beautiful.

BMLA All -Lake Gathering;

Our second annual event will be held at the Vet’s Camp sometime in May or June.

Last year’s event was a great success, and we hope to see an even larger turnout for 2023.
